Hawaii Census Records

Federal censuses for Hawaii began in 1900 (Hawaii Islands were annexed to the United States in 1898), and continue every ten years thereafter. They are currently available through 1920.

During the 1900 census Hawaii was considered a territory of the United States and did not have a county structure in place. The census enumeration then took the form of reporting by island.

  • Hawaii

  • Kauai

  • Maui

  • Molokai

  • Oahu

In all census after the 1900 there were counties established and reporting was done by that method. Due to the uniqueness of the Hawaii Islands, all information is presented on the index page. Unfortunately there is little information available online for free at this time. Ancestry’s census images provide the best chance of finding your Hawaiian ancestor.
